After making a wrong turn out of my daughter’s friend’s driveway out in the middle of nowhere the other day, I found myself in Mt Airy, MD, in front of one of the best shops in the area, Super Foods on Main.My favorite thing to get at Super Foods is the Berry Blast smoothie with hemp protein and super greens. They also have organic, vegan, gluten-free, and raw lunch selections. It’s a combination of café and grocery store, including produce and a freezer section. There are quite a few shelves of vitamins and supplements. Some of the more unique things they have are dried superfruits, organic olives, dehydrators, sprouting kits, and baby food. They also organize events, meal plans, and classes. Pictured are some of the flours and tonic herbs.
If you can’t go somewhere like this in person, it’s fun to check out their menu and try to recreate some of the recipes at home, especially the smoothies, elixirs, and desserts. I’ll tell you what’s in this month’s smoothie specials (you can always ask for organic raw almond milk or other substitutions):
- Creamy Chocolate Delight: organic cocoa powder, banana, rice milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and chocolate cashew butter.
- Weight Loss Smoothie: spinach, rice milk, extra protein powder, coconut oil, & chia seeds.
Power boosters you can add to drinks include protein powders, super powders (like ashwaghanda powder), antioxidant powders (like camu camu), and green powders. Green powders include spirulina, chlorella, marine phytoplankton, blue-green algae, and vitamineral green.
