Vegies in raised beds

Here’s a garden update: the carrots never appeared unfortunately. There’s only one and I think it’s a volunteer back from last year.
I went out to get a picture and ended up spending a half hour pulling weeds in just one of the raised bed sections. I decided to put newspaper down and cover it with some straw so I don’t get stuck doing that again. Mulch or wood chips don’t go very far for the cost and they’re a pain to lug around, but the bale of straw that I got to put over some grass seed was $7 and will be enough for the whole garden.

The section where I finished the straw has honeydew and cantaloupe (yeah, I’m not sure where I’m going to direct them as they start creeping out of the box). The other three boxes in the photo have pickles, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and something else that I didn’t mark.

The other part of the yard (below) has more tomatoes and the zucchini. There are lots of flowers on everything and a couple little baby zukes and tomatoes. If I figure out a new spot for more planters next year, I’d still like to have chard, kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower, but I’m OK without feeding those to the groundhogs this year.

How’s it going at your house?  Tomorrow I’ll get some pictures of my mother-in-law’s garden and she’ll put us to shame. I know the lawn is a mess by the way – it’s a work in progress – some of it is going to become a mulch path when I have time.
